Get your tickets for the 39th Annual Banks-Pierro-Rutland-Bellamy Social & Behavioral Sciences Colloquium & Scholarship Luncheon that will be this Friday, April 5, 2019 at 12 noon in the Student Amenities Building on the campus of Fort Valley State University. The originator of this event is Dr. Bellamy, the author of the book Light in the Valley: A Pictorial History of Fort Valley State College Since 1895.
These four individuals, Banks, Pierro, Rutland, and Bellamy shaped the study of social and behavioral sciences at Fort Valley State University. Yes we need our Lawyers, Police Officers, Politicians, Historians, Social Workers and Psychologist like never before today. This Social and Behavioral Sciences Department grooms students for those careers. On Friday, over a dozen students will be presenting research & poster presentations and others will also be receiving scholarships. Senator Jackson and other Members of the Georgia State Senate To Host Press Conference on Senate Bill 273
ATLANTA, GA - Senator Lester Jackson (D-Savannah) filed Senate Bill 273 which would create a State Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) System in the state of Georgia. Senator Jackson will address historic underfunding of state HBCU institutions, solutions to reverse declining enrollment and the potential for a state HBCU system to create engineering, pharmacy and law schools for its students.
The press conference will be on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the Georgia State Capitol to address proposed legislation to strengthen all three of Georgia’s state HBCUs (Savannah State University, Albany State University and Fort Valley State University). All three institutions will maintain their name and historical significance.

Catch your first glimpse of the 2019 Wildcats! The Fort Valley State football team takes to the Wildcat Stadium grass for the annual Blue and Gold Spring Game this Saturday in a 1 p.m. kick-off.
The FVSU athletic department encourages all family, friends and fans to enjoy the action with no admission fee. Gates will open at noon, an hour before the start of the scrimmage.
The Fort Valley State University will be having a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Samuel Henry Bishop Hall, which is home to the Media Studies academic program. The evening is March 27, 2019 at 11 AM to 12 PM in the FVSU Historic Quadrangle. The ribbon cutting will be at 11:30 AM followed by a reception.
The Fort Valley State University South Metro Atlanta Alumni Chapter will be having their fundraiser to support scholarships for students. The event will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2019 from 6 PM to 9 PM at the Fishers of Men Seafood Restaurant, 1500 Mount Zion Road, #202, Morrow, Georgia 30260. The cost of the event is $20. The Fort Valley State University will host its 32nd annual scholarship luncheon at noon, Monday, February 18, 2019. Doors open at 11 a.m. Sponsored by the FVSU Foundation, Inc., the scholarship luncheon is the largest single-day of fundraiser providing scholarship for FVSU students. The luncheon, themed “Empowering Scholars With the Gift of Excellence,” will be held in the university’s Health and Physical Education Complex. U.S. Congressman Sanford Bishop and Georgia Representative Calvin Smyre will serve as hosts.

The Fort Valley State University National Alumni Association Southern Crescent Alumni Chapter presents the 5th Annual Taste of the Valley. The 2nd Annual King Hardwood Classic pits the Wildcats of Fort Valley State University versus the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College. The game will be played on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Wintrust Arena, 200 East Cermak Road, Chicago, Illinois 60616 at 3 pm. Tickets starting at $25. The game is hosted by the BCSG 360, a non-profit organization, with the mission of connecting urban youth to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). One private and one public school will participate in a single game match-up estimated to welcome 6,500 fans to Chicago, IL. King Hardwood Classic – NCAA College Basketball event is soon to become one of the premier HBCU Sporting events in the country. Proceeds from this event will benefit the participating colleges/universities, both the United Negro College Fund and Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and local Chicago charitable organizations.

COACH LOMAX BRIEF LEGACY:
Born in Athens, GA, great high school & college coach whose career in the Peach state spanned 29 years (1948-1977). At Risely High School in Brunswick, GA, he led his football team to the 1950 & 1957 state championships while compiling a 101-36-4 mark. His 1950 team scored 427 points & allowed only 35. He also won 2 state titles in basketball and 5 consecutive titles in track & field. Coach Lomax became head football coach at Fort Valley State College in 1963 & stayed until 1977. With a solid record of 86-33-1, his teams captured 4 SIAC footbll championships & twice competed in the NCAA playoffs. In 1972, Lomax’s Wildcats became the first all-black college football team to be featured on an ABC-TV regionally telecasted game. He was named SIAC Football “Coach of the Year” 4 times. He was also the head basketball coach of the Wildcats from 1963-1967. He is inducted in both the Fort Valley State College Alumni Hall of Fame in 1979 & the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in 1986.
